Surfcasting Wild Osa in Costa Rica’s South Pacific
Surf and fly fishermen will have a ball exploring Osa’s rich waters from shore. With a variety of pristine beaches, reefs and river mouths, the area has an array of incredible surf casting locations offering plug and/or fly fishing shots at roosterfish, snook, snapper, jacks and other large predators. Fishing is generally incredible year-round, but December-April (Costa Rica’s dry season) sees slightly better visibility and roosterfish action and June-October (Costa Rica’s wet season) sees more possibilities for snook as they leave their mangrove hideaways and enter the ocean to hunt.
Nearshore sardine migrations can mean great opportunities for surfcasters to find predators smashing through pods of bait, and while May/June is known for such baitfish aggregations, blitzes can happen at any time of the year given the right conditions. Fishing can be pretty action-packed, and not much is more exhilarating then sprinting down the beach at top speed to get into position to throw a plug or fly to a light up rooster tearing through bait with its dorsal out of the water. Overall, its a very challenging but rewarding way to fish the area. Combine a few days on the sand or rocks with your another bluewater & inshore adventure, or focus on this stunningly beautiful fishery on its own.
This area has an array of great accommodation options for anglers and non anglers alike, including private beach houses, luxury to standard lodges, and friendly B&Bs. We also ensure you know exactly where to grab an excellent meal and/or find a great watering hole for thirsty anglers and adventure seekers at the conclusion of each day.
Besides incredible fly fishing, Osa and the surrounding area offers some of the finest adventure and wildlife tours in the world.
